I don’t know anything about these characters but I do love it’s a “stepson”, it shows that other people can have a significant impact on kids even when not their parents. People tend to take good stepparents for granted.

About to get so deep into this pickle town lore lol. In a book I'm writing, the MC was pretty badly neglected and abused by his ma before being placed into foster care. A woman working in EU Military Intelligence yoinked him, used him as a child agent for a mission (he pretended to be her kid), and was gonna kill him cos kids are stinky blabbermouths but changed her mind. Also she found out that she was his aunt, through being his father's sister, and for the next 5 years is something of a mother figure to him, but one whose approval is very conditional on him obeying her orders and succeeding on missions. 5 years later, he breaks free from his auntie/boss, also foiling a world-takeover plan she had amid an alien invasion... that part is complicated, and is basically the first arc of the story. An unknown amount of time after that (as I've yet to get to this part of the story, but plan to), he's gonna visit his mum for the first time in years. She's going to have reformed herself quite a bit. No longer consumes certain substances. Has a normal job. She's married, and has had three kids with her husband. And she's never mentioned her first child's existence to her family. And will be trying to keep him out of her family's sight. And will be telling him to leave, to never come back, and to never attempt to contact her or "her family" (very important she doesn't consider him a part of it) ever again.

Thats literally what happened to me, my dads wife raised me, my mom didnt have custody and she was with me for 8 years and she left. Divorce the parents not the kids.
